Well we ignored all the blues of the bay
And took a wrong turn on the highway
The day was all wrong from the start, thought I’d left you alone in Texas
And the people we’ll see won’t know much of me,
though I don’t know what they’ll say when they see you, oh

The party froze at the scene of the crime
And I stood there at ease in the mean time
As you walked off stubbornly drunken, rattling off all my mistakes
But your nonsense won’t bother nothin’, so just the hand the keys to me

I wasted my time, wishing for your empty seat
I’ve sat in a daze, retracing my tracks on this concrete
but I’m done slumping on the I-79

I drowned your voice with the car’s pulsing bass
And passing streetlights spilled orange on my face
The officer gave you a warning of troubles and trials to come
But you won’t remember til morning, so just hand these keys to me

We took our exit and drove downhill home
I realized suddenly that I was alone
The highway stood empty and hollow, the moonlight showed soft on its paint
Well it’s harder to lead than to follow, but you’ve given these keys to me

I’ve seen all the signs, pointing somewhere that I could not go
Been looking for help in the symbols that I do not know
